Science Boys

Me and Kirsty created the idea of the 'Science Boys' and decided to trial it in this continuity project as we would like to do a better version for our final project. The conecpt is a group of science-nerds who are best friends but end up in detention.... The idea came from us wanted to create a British teen-movie that would be fun and we used inspiration from The Inbetweeners and The Big Bang Theory. So, here is the taster of Science Boys- it's a little rough and has taught us that A LOT of planning and some better acting will be required if we want to use this idea for our final project! However, enjoy.....

  1. Got a lot of black at the start - we needed to cut that out before rendering the final version (no wonder it's 6 minutes long...!)

    (Starts at 4:43)

The credits are actually quite effective; when you come to look at actual sequences, have a think about font size as well as the kinds of credits which pop up.

4.59 - The opening shot is rather well framed, although the camera is slightly canted (look at the angle of the roof compared to the black line at the top). This shot invites a close up of the clock. It would perhaps have been good to start with an establishing shot (of the school) which then focused in on one classroom...?

    5.02 - Again, a well-framed shot

5.11 - I like the mise-en-scene here, although you've mixed the audio a little too high so it's hard to make out the dialogue.

5.16 - A rather good over the shoulder shot here

5.20 - The jump cut here is not really effective;you should really have cut away to something else (CU on Humby?) before cutting back to Sean walking across the room. The pan is very smooth and thus effective

5.33 - Where did the other guy come from? I don't think you established that he was in the room? The only time you would use this type of shock edit would be if you wanted the second character to be e.g. imaginary or a ghost. That said, the framing is quite nice, although if he's equal in status to Humby you should have filmed him from the same distance. I'm not so keen on the pan here - always looks a little ropey, unless it's done really well. I would have cut back to your MCU of Humby

5.50 - This works quite well; I would have shot Humby from this angle for the other clips as well...

You just about get away with the 180 degree rule, although I'm hard pressed to find an action match. You also just blag a shot/ reverse shot. The idea itself is sound, if you plan to take this forward as an idea for your final piece, but you will need to be a lot more imaginative in terms of your range of shots as well as your editing. I would really suggest that you watch the opening sequence of "Trainspotting" and use this as an inspiration...

As it stands, this would probably just scrape into L3, but I would need to really push it, based primarily on the quality of the framing and the fact that there are a range of different angles and shots. But it would be tight...
